SteelSeries or BuddyPad mouse pad: full 2026 comparison

SteelSeries QcK or BuddyPad? On one side, the most-used pad in global esports history, a legend that’s equipped pros for over 15 years. On the other, a boutique that proves you can have a pad as performant and 100 times more beautiful. We compared everything.

SteelSeries QcK: the world’s best-selling esports pad

Why the QcK became the pro reference

The SteelSeries QcK appeared in 2003 and has never left the global top sales. Its secret? A micro-woven fabric scientifically optimized for modern optical sensors, an ultra-stable natural rubber non-slip base, and sizes ranging from Mini to 5XL. It’s used in practically every major esports tournament: CS2, Valorant, DOTA 2. It’s the objective sector reference.

BuddyPad: the boutique that bets on design

BuddyPad isn’t trying to dethrone the QcK on pure esports performance - that would be presumptuous. On the other hand, BuddyPad offers something SteelSeries will never offer: a pad that looks like you. Exclusive manga and anime designs, fantasy and minimalist, at prices below the QcK, with surface performance that covers 95% of gaming uses.

The SteelSeries range decoded

QcK (cloth): from Mini to 4XL

The QcK cloth is available in 7 different sizes: Mini (250×210 mm) up to 4XL (1220×590 mm). The micro-woven fabric surface offers precise tracking at low and high resolution. Hand-washable. Price: between $25 and $50 depending on size. It’s the no-brainer choice for a gamer who wants a reliable, proven surface.

QcK Hard: the hard pad for FPS

The QcK Hard replaces fabric with a rigid polyethylene surface, a hard pad. Result: maximum glide, extreme precision, near-unlimited durability. It’s the pad of FPS players who play at very high sensitivity (800 DPI and up). Price: around $35. Nothing comparable at BuddyPad on the hard pad side.

QcK RGB: the lit option

The QcK Prism RGB adds an LED edge with two zones, customizable via SteelSeries GG software. The surface remains identical to the cloth QcK. Price: between $50 and $70. The lighting changes nothing about performance, it’s a purely aesthetic choice for setups with RGB sync.

Surface and tracking: which performs better?

The SteelSeries micro-woven fabric: tested by pros

The QcK fabric is the result of two decades of iteration and testing with professional players. Its micro-woven weave reduces resistance between the surface and mouse skates to a level optimal for sensor tracking, both at low sensitivity (wide arm movements) and high sensitivity (wrist micro-adjustments). It’s objectively one of the best fabrics on the market for competitive gaming.

BuddyPad: high density optimized for versatile use

BuddyPad’s high-density fabric isn’t identical to the QcK, let’s be honest. For very high-level esports use, the QcK is objectively superior. On the other hand, for 95% of gamers who play 1 to 6 hours a day at a casual to semi-competitive level, the difference is imperceptible in practice. BuddyPad’s comfort, stitched edges and artistic designs more than compensate for this small tracking gap.

Available sizes: QcK vs BuddyPad

SteelSeries crushes BuddyPad on size variety: 7 formats for the QcK vs 4 for BuddyPad (up to XXL). If you need a compact Mini format or a 4XL deskmat of 120 cm, the QcK is the only answer. For S to XXL formats (which represent 90% of uses), BuddyPad covers exactly the same needs.

Design: BuddyPad’s hidden strength against the plain QcK

The QcK exists in plain black. SteelSeries occasionally offers limited editions (artist or game collaborations) but they’re rare and often overpriced. BuddyPad permanently offers more than 20 exclusive designs: samurai, cherry blossoms, dark fantasy worlds, minimalist designs and Girl Boss collections. To build a setup with character, there’s no contest.

Price and value in 2026

Prices are broadly close for equivalent formats: the QcK L costs about $30, the BuddyPad L about $25. On the XXL, BuddyPad ($35) is slightly cheaper than the QcK 3XL or 4XL ($45 to $55). Globally: similar prices, but BuddyPad offers a colossal design advantage at equivalent budget.

Our verdict: QcK or BuddyPad based on your profile

Choose SteelSeries if…

You play at a serious competitive level (ranked, tournaments) and every millisecond of tracking counts: the QcK is the global esports standard for 15 years. You need a 4XL or 5XL format that doesn’t exist at BuddyPad. You want a pro-quality rigid hard pad (QcK Hard). You want to sync your pad’s RGB with GG Engine (QcK Prism).

Choose BuddyPad if…

You play at a casual to semi-competitive level and want a desk with character. BuddyPad offers the same performance as the standard cloth QcK for 95% of uses, with manga, fantasy and minimalist designs that SteelSeries will never offer. At near-identical prices, the choice is obvious if your setup’s aesthetics matter to you.

FAQ - SteelSeries vs BuddyPad

Is the SteelSeries QcK better than BuddyPad for gaming?+

For very high-level competitive gaming (pro esports, ranked), the QcK has an objective advantage thanks to its micro-woven fabric optimized for modern optical sensors. For 95% of gamers, BuddyPad offers equivalent performance with the advantage of exclusive design.

Can you wash a SteelSeries QcK pad like a BuddyPad?+

Yes, the cloth QcK is also hand-washable in cold water, same recommendation as BuddyPad. The QcK Hard must not be immersed: a simple damp cloth is enough. Neither goes in a machine without risk of damaging the fabric or rubber base.

Does BuddyPad come in a format as large as the QcK 4XL?+

Currently no: BuddyPad stops at XXL (90×40 cm / 35×16 in). The QcK 4XL and 5XL are extreme deskmat formats BuddyPad doesn’t yet cover. If you’re looking for a pad covering an entire large desk, the QcK XXL or 3XL is the option.

Why is the QcK used by esports pros and not BuddyPad?+

The QcK has been the esports reference for over 15 years, with tournament partnerships and years of surface optimization in collaboration with pro players. BuddyPad is a recent boutique positioned on design first. Both target different profiles: pure esports performance vs exclusive design and daily gaming performance.
