A wrist rest is the kind of accessory you often buy as a reaction: after wrist pain, a diagnosed carpal tunnel syndrome, or a long session that ended with your hands on fire. Two materials go head to head on the market - gel and foam - and the arguments from each camp are often contradictory.

What a wrist rest is supposed to do

Foam spreads pressure over a larger surface, reducing the concentrated pressure points characteristic of gel. It maintains a stable height regardless of ambient temperature, and its firmness can be chosen according to the type of use: soft for a quiet office, firmer for active gaming.

High-density foam also handles washing and cleaning far better. A splash of soapy water, a flat dry - and the wrist rest is good as new. Gel, on the other hand, is often covered with a stitched fabric that can’t always be removed easily.

In terms of longevity, a quality foam keeps its properties for 3 to 5 years of normal use, whereas gel often reaches its limits before 2 years.

Which height should you choose?

The wrist rest height should match the thickness of your mouse pad. For a standard 3-4 mm cloth gaming pad, a wrist rest 15-20 mm tall creates a slight dorsal flexion of the wrist - slightly favorable according to ergonomists. Too high, and the wrist goes into hyperextension; too low, and the wrist rest plays no role at all.
